The promise of great things. Britain's first motorway was opened, offering miles and miles of uninterrupted grass verge for the family picnic and miles and miles of three lane uncluttered tarmac to test the new offering from Jaguar, the E-type. Whether we believe that those first E-types broke the Ton-and-a-half (150mph) is a moot point. But like a lot of stories and myths its often more fun to believe than not. It wasn't long before adhoc picnicking and 150mph runs on the M1 were both outlawed.
